Faced with the measure of the Council of State to drastically reduce the use of Palladium due to noise pollution, the City of Geneva expresses its annoyance.
The Palladium will have to scale back its festive evenings. The measure has been making noise since Thursday, Alfonso Gomez, administrative advisor in charge of finance, environment and housing, appears annoyed by the decision.
Basically, the City hears and joins the work of the Air, Noise and Non-Ionizing Radiation Service (SABRA) which fights against noise pollution. “Noise is an extremely important problem in our canton,” says Alfonso Gomez, who believes that the City of Geneva has not been heard. We had proposed an intermediate solution which was not considered. We would like SABRA to take measures on other sources of noise which today are not really attacked,” explains the administrative advisor.

Concretely, the decision to drastically reduce the use of the Palladium comes from the observation that the events organized in the room harm local residents, particularly after the densification brought by the Jonction eco-district.
As a result, the City of Geneva will only be able to organize one evening per month, with nuisance of less than 93 decibels (the equivalent of the noise between a lawn mower and a horn). Once a year, an event lasting a maximum of two evenings may exceed this sound volume.
A study will soon be carried out on the entire building to determine the extent of future renovation and upgrading. In the meantime, the Palladium will have to put a damper on it.
For Alfonso Gomez, there is hope of seeing SABRA reverse its decision and find a middle ground. “Again, we understand the decision. But it is above all on this intermediate aspect – while waiting for the renovation – on the basis of our proposals that we hope that an agreement will be possible,” recalls the administrative advisor.
