The recognition of Vienna as the most liveable city in the world by The Economist can partly be attributed to public transport. Accessibility, combined with the goal of carbon neutrality by 2040, has significantly influenced the mobility choices of Vienna residents.
About half of the Austrian capital's two million residents use the city's affordable transit card, which costs just one euro a day or 365 euros a year. This profitability stimulates the use of public transport and contributes to environmental protection. City officials point out that Vienna's extensive network of buses, trams and trains collectively travel the distance around the world five times a day.
Public transport at the heart of Viennese life
Public transport plays a central role in life in Vienna: three out of ten residents rely on it, while more than a third walk and only a quarter use the car. Wiener Linien, the company that runs the system, reported 792 million passengers in 2022, with a significant contribution from both the metro and tram. A recent survey shows how satisfied the Viennese are with public transport. Vienna ranks first among 83 European cities with an evaluation of 91%.
