“Freedom is essential. It depends on each of us, on our civic commitment. We must think about how we ourselves can participate in the destiny of a people.” expressed François Sauvadet to young elected officials this Wednesday, November 6 in Dijon.
This Wednesday, President François Sauvadet welcomed the new Departmental Youth Advisors to the Hôtel du Département, marking the launch of their two-year mandate. Aged 11 to 15, these 54 middle school students were elected to represent their establishments and carry the voice of Côte-d'Orienne youth within the Departmental Assembly. True ambassadors of their generation, their mission will be to carry out projects of general interest and to strengthen dialogue between young people and their elected representatives.
During this inaugural meeting, François Sauvadet gave an inspiring speech, addressing two subjects particularly in line with the concerns of the younger generation: the responsible use of social networks and commitment to the environment.
“Freedom is essential. It depends on each of us, on our civic commitment. We must think about how we ourselves can participate in the destiny of a people. A people is each man, each woman, each young person who, like you tomorrow, will take charge of the destiny of the country. I am very proud of you when I hear your first testimonies.” expressed François Sauvadet to the young people.
Prevention of the dangers of social networks
President Sauvadet did not fail to recall the importance of thoughtful use of social networks and mobile phones. “The cell phone is a fantastic tool for communicating and obtaining information, but you have to master it and be vigilant. Everything that is put in there can be made public at any time,” he warned, and continued: “When you see a comrade who is in danger or who is unwell, he must be able to 'express. It’s important to talk about it because you should never stay alone when you have a problem.” This prevention message is all the more relevant at a time when young people are constantly connected and can be exposed to risks such as online harassment. Aware of these issues, the new elected officials will therefore be responsible for raising awareness among their classmates about the proper use of digital tools, including social networks, while continuing the actions initiated to combat school bullying.
A mandate under the sign of ecology
Alongside this prevention, François Sauvadet highlighted ecological commitment, a theme close to the heart of this new generation. The Department will use this mandate to develop concrete initiatives in the area of ecological transition. Environmental awareness actions, solidarity projects and cultural events will punctuate these two years of office. Through these projects, young elected officials will work to strengthen the link between youth and their territory while learning the responsibilities of civic engagement.
A major consultation in 2025
Among the major initiatives planned, the Departmental Youth Advisors will launch a departmental consultation with their comrades in 2025. This ambitious project aims to survey the aspirations and expectations of Côte-d'Or middle school students on various current issues, including the environment and living together. The results of this consultation, which will be revealed on May 27 during a major event, will allow elected officials to better understand the concerns of young people and adapt the department's actions accordingly.
“The Youth Departmental Advisors are the representatives of a generation that thirsts for change, of a generation that wants to commit to the future. It’s a great civic adventure that awaits them,” concluded François Sauvadet, recalling the essential role of this youth in building the society of tomorrow.
