Vendée Globe: 30,000 classes will experience an educational adventure with Sam Davies and Initiatives-Cœur

This Sunday, November 10, in Les Sables-d'Olonne, Sam Davies will start his 4th Vendée Globe. At the helm of Initiatives-Cœur, the sailor will display strong sporting ambitions but also solidarity, with the objective of saving 106 children suffering from heart defects. The adventure will also be educational with the distribution of 30,000 educational kits to schools. Designed by teachers for an entire class, they are accompanied by a blog for all levels, from kindergarten to high school, and 25 videos offered by the famous host Jamy Gourmaud. In addition, video conferences with the boat will be organized to allow students to communicate with Sam, live from the oceans. Finally, students will be able to take part in different challenges. Explanations.

Resources for all subjects and all levels
The Vendée Globe is an adventure that fascinates all ages. Every four years, many teachers set up an educational project with their class to follow the race as closely as possible while addressing many concepts in the program. Benefiting from all the expertise of Initiatives.fr, title sponsor of the boat, the kit provided by Initiatives is acclaimed by the teaching staff. Designed for an entire class, it includes a large map of the route (120x80cm), a 55-page multidisciplinary exercise booklet for cycle 3 (CM1, CM2, 6th grade), with 30 models of the boat to distribute to students.

The sheets allow you to address concepts as varied as the great explorers (history), the operation of a watermaker or the nutritional balance (science), the nautical mile (maths), GPS (geometry), climates ( geography) or Vignt a thousand leagues under the sea (literature).

The educational kit is accompanied by an educational blog including resources offered by teachers in all subjects and all levels: from kindergarten to high school.

PE is not left out since a major sporting and solidarity challenge, called “the school race”, will offer students the opportunity to run the equivalent of a world tour (40,075 km) by accumulating the kilometers traveled . A mobilization which should make it possible to save six additional children.

For this 2024 edition of the solo, non-stop and unassisted world tour, Initiatives-Cœur is also offering a competition called “VENDÉFI”. Three challenges are possible: VENDÉFI ART, VENDÉFI SCIENCES and VENDÉFI SOLIDAIRE (more information here: https://blog.initiatives.fr/concours-vendefi-2024-29692)

Live mapping and videoconferencing to embark on the adventure

Teachers will be able to follow the race on live mapping which includes Sam Davies' logbook. We find his menus there, in order to understand the number of calories ingested by a skipper depending on the geographical area crossed, as well as his sleep rhythm recorded in real time thanks to his connected alarm clock, in order to observe the split sleep of navigators in the race and to make comparisons with sleeping times on land according to the ages of life.

The part of the live dedicated to the boat in 3D also allows you to understand which sails are in position in real time, to know the temperature on board and in the water, to discuss speed in miles and kilometers and the notion of universal time .

Teachers will be invited to participate in video conferences with Sam Davies, live from the boat, during which she will answer questions sent by students.

Challenge the oceans to save children
If so many teachers want to follow and share the adventure of Sam Davies, it is also for the cause that Initiatives-Cœur has supported since its creation, in 2009. Indeed, the boat challenges the oceans to save children, in conjunction with the Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque association, which allows children with heart defects from disadvantaged countries to undergo surgery in . For each click on the boat's Facebook and Instagram accounts, the sponsor partners (Les Chocolats du Cœur, K-Line and Vinci Énergies) pay €1 to the association. 394 children were thus able to be saved before the 2024 Vendée Globe, thanks to the boat which hopes to finance the operation of 106 additional children at the end of the race in order to reach the 500th child saved.
