The divisions within American society highlighted by the race for the 2024 White House are deep. Colson Whitehead, American novelist and double Pulitzer Prize winner, sheds his light on the election and the situation in the country for France 2.

On the sidelines of the American presidential election, Tuesday, November 5, writer and journalist Colson Whitehead agreed to comment on the vote for France 2, in the heart of the black neighborhood of Manhattan, in New York (United States).

A particular election where for the first time, a black woman presents herself: “I think there are more misogynists, sexists”in the United States, believes the author, double Pulitzer Prize winner. “But we will have a woman president, if not this year, it will be in four years or eight years”he assures, however.

“What worries me most is that we could have a fascist in power who doesn't believe in climate change and who can deport 12 million people”on the other hand, points out Colson Whitehead about Donald Trump. “I think the country is really divided, but I don’t imagine a new civil war”adds the novelist about the election, which does not foresee possible reconciliation between the two Americas “of [son] vivant”.
