Air pollution in Paris does not only come from cars. The Respire and Clean Cities associations published this Tuesday, November 5, 2024 a study showing the impact of transport of goods on air quality. Heavy goods vehicles and light utility vehicles (LCVs), which represent 20% of Parisian traffic, are the cause of 40% of pollutant concentrations in the capital.

To alleviate this scourge, organizations recommend setting up a peaceful delivery area (ZLA) in Paris. Only bicycles or vehicles with electric or hydrogen engines could provide freight transport services. “Deliveries are useful to our daily lives, to economic activity. With this study, we are not saying that we must stop deliveries, we say that they must be transformed », Explained Tony Renucci, general director of the Respire association, on BFMTV Île-de-.

Parisians for a ZLA

“Initially, a time window of 4 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. could allow all types of vehicles to operate, then restrictions would apply for the rest of the day on thermal vehicles. Other cities in France (, , ) have already implemented such measures, demonstrating thatit is possible to act for the health of residents of the capital,” the study also notes.

An Opinion Way survey carried out for the two associations in June 2024 highlighted Parisians' annoyance with trucks and vans. 81% of them said they were in favorto the establishment of a ZLA type solution.

For Tony Renucci, the transport of goods in Paris is “a question of pollution and public health“. “If we managed to switch this entire fleet to electric or with the use of cyclologistics, we could avoid at least 92 deaths per year and 50 hospitalizations linked to pollution in Paris,” he underlined on the set of the continuous news channel.
