In the Jura, impressive clouds formed near the mountains. Similar to a waterfall, they amazed the locals.
Part of the reason we love spending time looking at clouds is because some of them are particularly impressive. Last August, an apocalyptic-looking cloud formed in Hérault, while in the United Kingdom, a resident immortalized wave-shaped clouds last year.
This Sunday, November 3, in the morning, a new meteorological phenomenon unlike any other impressed the residents. In the mountains, a “cloud cascade” formed. The clouds, coming from Switzerland, poured onto the peaks of the Jura, like an avalanche.
“Yesterday, as for several days, Switzerland was covered in fog. Then the fog ceiling rose. They were pushed towards the Jura mountains by a rather cool east wind. It was 10 degrees in Switzerland near Yverdon, Lausanne or Neuchâtel. The cold air met much warmer air over Haut-Doubs, where it was 15-20 degrees. There was a Foehn effect. The cold air, the mists came to flow on the slopes of the Jura mountains. The fogs gradually collapsed,” explained Ilyes Ghouil, meteorologist.
An impressive phenomenon
This fascinating appearance was immortalized by Sébastien Populaire, mayor of the town of Touillon-et-Loutelet. To take his photo, the elected official went to an altitude of 1,050 meters, near the Métabuief ski resort.
“It was very impressive, it looked like a waterfall of clouds. This lasted most of the morning. I have only one regret, not having gone to the foot of this waterfall to see the fog die away,” Sébastien Populaire told France 3.

This meteorological phenomenon fascinates photographers. Although it remains rare, it forms from time to time since it has already appeared in 2018, 2020 and 2021. If you live in Jura and have not seen these impressive clouds, you may be able to try your luck again in the coming weeks, thanks to the persistence of Swiss fog.
