Lhe United States is about to descend to the bottom of an abyss, and who knows if we will ever come out of it. November 5, 2024 could be the date of the last legitimate election in our country. I realized something was wrong when Donald Trump announced that his horde of supporters « Make America great again » absolutely had to come and vote for him on election day because they would no longer need to vote afterward. I had assumed that it was a flamboyant display of his splendor, and that our ex-president, with his fake orange hair and strange orange complexion, was showing off to his friends. Today I'm not so sure.
Trump failed in his first coup attempt in 2021. [Pour la présidentielle de 2020]he had developed a scheme to find false electors in his favor, but the plan did not work, thanks to Mike Pence, his vice-president, who, in a gesture of resistance, certified the number of voters in each state.
Yet Trump did not give up. He encouraged the Proud Boys and other white supremacists to storm the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021, attempt to hang Mike Pence and knock out Nancy Pelosi, then the Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives, in order to continue to reside on Pennsylvania Avenue [où se situe la Maison Blanche]as a victim of a rigged election.
Police officers were injured in the assault and one succumbed to his injuries, but the Capitol held firm. Joe Biden was proclaimed winner of the election, a result certified that evening by Congress which had returned to the Capitol grounds. However, a certain number of Republicans, whose lives had been threatened a few hours earlier, nevertheless voted for Trump's election to be ratified.

An aura of “illegitimacy” surrounded Biden throughout his presidency, and it still does. Trump has simply set up a virtual Oval Office at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. And for many of his supporters, he remains the shadow president, a president with orange hair and a sulky, irascible face. No matter how many indictments he gets, no matter how many classified documents wander through the bathrooms and basements of Mar-a-Lago, Trump will never be prosecuted for high treason.
