The Marlens body of water is stocked every year by the two fishing companies: the “fly fishing” company (fishing period from mid-October to mid-March) and the “all fishing” company (from spring to fall). This year, fishermen put four and a half tonnes of fish into the body of water. The problem is that these fish are more of a dinner for cormorants than for fishermen.
“The great cormorant is clever and adapts to our sound traps” – Guy Chapuis from the fly fishing company
This situation with migratory birds has already been going on for several years and cohabitation with fishermen is clearly not easy: “When we arrive, early in the morning, there are around fifteen great cormorants. Our body of water is not very large, so the birds gather the fish in a corner of the body of water, they hurt them or kill them. The fish have no escape like on Lake Annecy, they cannot go very deep. explains Alain, fly fisherman. “You should know that these birds are clever”, adds Guy Chapuis, president of the fly fishing company. “If we managed to scare or even eliminate the first ones to settle down, the others would not come. This is why we asked the prefecture and the lieutenant of the wolf shop to kill the first cormorants that arrive on the site”. For the moment, authorization for these shots has not been given.

Sounds of orcas hunting every two minutes on the water
The two fishing companies in Marlens have invested in a sound scarerinstalled on the lake. “It cost us 3,600 euros“, specifies Guy Chapuis, who does not appreciate these large birds, but who has documented a lot about them. “The device retransmits sounds of orcas hunting. This comes from Commander Cousteau and his team. They had observed that when the organs hunted sardines, the great cormorants did not approach, because they were eaten by the orcas These orca sounds were reproduced by CNRS researchers and these are the sounds that resound every two minutes on the water during fishing opening hours.
The great cormorant is considered “the marine glutton who settles everywhere”. And it is because it hurts and kills fish, even without needing to feed, that it is so poorly regarded by fishermen. Unlike the heron, which only fishes for food.
