For Antoine Dupont, this November tour marks a turning point: a year after the disillusionment against the Springboks in the quarter-final of the World Cup, the captain of the Blues takes up the torch with a new ambition. For him, this new cycle begins now.
With the arrival of a staff that he has not yet worked with on a daily basis, Dupont enters a bit of unknown territory, surrounded by many new faces. Particularly within the group concocted by Fabien Galthié. “So a lot of new stuff, obviously that takes us towards our ultimate objective, which will be the next World Cup.“
Among these new elements, Nolann Le Garrec, 22 years old, particularly attracts attention. After his promising debut during the 6 Nations Tournament, the Racingman earned his Blue stripes by splashing the field with his talent and creativity, notably with a spectacular chistera against Wales which left its mark.
So much so that for the November tests, it is he who should start against Japan at the expense of Bordeaux's Maxime Lucu, usual replacement for Dupont. “Nolann, I worked with him during the 2023 Tournament where he had a match sheet without returning (against Italy, Editor's note). But he came to train with us several times.“
For Dupont, competition is healthy and motivating. “Obviously, every time there is a quality player in his position, it always pushes you to try to be better. It can only have a positive impact“, admits the captain. Nolann, Émilien, Théo, Paul… these young players are arriving in force, with solid performances in the Top 14 and a brilliant career in the French youth teams.
Towards a new dynamic
At almost 28 years old, Dupont feels rejuvenated and empowered in the face of this new wave. He even jokes: “When we look at the dates of birth of some of the people on the list, I still seem old!“But above all he recognizes the immense potential of this rising generation.”Whether it's Nolann or the others, it's normal that they are called upon for the performances they provide.“
For the Toulouse resident, this generational mix is essential to maintain a competitive team always in search of progress. It's this dynamic, made up of young talents and veteranswhich could allow the Blues to aim high in the years to come. Dupont, as leader, sees this as an opportunity to reinvent himself, while remaining the cornerstone of this French team.
