The legendary red train which connects Chamonix to the Mer de Glace in Haute-Savoie has now been operated by the department since Friday November 1, 2024. To celebrate this resumption, all tickets are free from November 1 to 3.

The Montenvers train, also called the Mer de Glace train, has now been operated by the Haute-Savoie department since Friday November 1, 2024. For 70 years, it was managed by the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc in the form of a public service delegation (DSP).

To celebrate this recovery, train tickets are free from November 1 to 3.

The opportunity to discover the Mer de Glace site that the train connects from the city center of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, at almost 2,000 meters above sea level. Usually, the train is stopped in November to carry out maintenance work.

“This year, due to this exceptional situation and taking into account the All Saints' Day holidays ending on Sunday, the train will operate on November 1, 2 and 3, 2024. Its access will be free by decision of the board of directors within the limit of places available”, said Martial Saddier, president of the Haute-Savoie departmental council.

If you wish to take advantage of this offer, you will have to go directly to the venue; no online reservation is possible. The first train departure is at 8:30 a.m., then every 20 minutes. The last departure is at 3 p.m.

The site will then be closed until November 29, 2024.
