“Books give access to all the lives we will not lead, all the trips we will not take or even all the thoughts we cannot formulate,” begins Claude Fosse. At the end of October, the founder of the Langage Plural cultural association wanders between piles of books, piled up in the room with green doors located at the corner of rue des Arts and avenue Simone-Veil, in the town of Sorges-et-Ligueux-en-Périgord, in Dordogne.
From Saturday, November 2, the public will find a literary canteen in this village of 1,600 souls: Chez Simone, an establishment combining bookstore and (small) restaurants. News welcomed with enthusiasm by residents, especially when we know that the project is bringing life back to the premises of the old local bar, which closed a long time ago.
Make it an “artists’ village”
This additional address which relates to culture, a stone's throw from the third place of La Buissonnière, follows the desire of the mayor, Éric Séguy, to make the town “a village of artists”, reports Claude Fosse.

“The idea is to widen access to culture by giving art its rightful place. It’s a way of communicating,” continues the future bookseller, who works in partnership with La Librairie du château in Excideuil and La Mauvaise Herbe in Eymet.
Above all, she intends to “bring books to life”, by regularly organizing reading evenings, as well as meetings with authors. A first “test” has already attracted nearly fifty curious people, who came to listen to the author Romane Biron, currently in artist residency at Chalet Mauriac, in Saint-Symphorien, in Gironde. The public was thus able to listen to the first extracts from his future work, “Habiter le monde”, carried by the brand new publishing house of the Langage pluriel association.
Orality
The next highlight already planned at Chez Simone? An evening with Franco-Canadian author Nancy Huston (read elsewhere). Coming from the world of theater, Claude Fosse attaches particular importance to orality: “Reading aloud has real power,” believes the manager, who wants, in this way, to make Chez Simone a place of life for everyone, whether you are a fan of books or not. Enough to locate Sorges-et-Ligueux-en-Périgord on a map while infusing it with a hint of literary soul.
Practical. Opening hours: Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Thursday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Information on 09 60 04 54 58 or by email, [email protected] or [email protected].
A meeting with Nancy Huston
Meet on Saturday, December 14 at the literary canteen Chez Simone, where Franco-Canadian author Nancy Huston will present her latest work, “Adam and the Nymphs”, published by Éditions Langage Plural. A reading in the form of a show, since the words will be accompanied by the notes of pianist François Marillier. Exceptionally, entry will be charged. Limited places, reservation recommended.
