The news was officially announced during the plenary meeting of the heritage and local history section of the Union des Arts, Saturday October 19, 2024, at the town hall of Sartilly-Baie-Bocage (Manche).
As the section comes out of an “exceptional” year with 54 members (ten more than the previous one), its coordinator Jean-Pierre Lucas wondered at length after the 2024 Heritage Days, organized in Saint-Jean-le- Thomas from September 20 to 22, on the follow-up to this meeting organized each year in a different commune in the former canton of Sartilly.
“We only had very few families,” he lamented. “There is undoubtedly room to work more to integrate schoolchildren into the program and to communicate better via social networks. Preparing for these days is heavy to bear. Every year you have to find ideas and work flexibly with the partner associations of the municipality visited. »
The monument to those shot will be 100 years old
The celebration, on September 20, 2025, of the centenary of the inauguration, in the Sartilly cemetery, of the monument in memory of the four corporals of Souain, shot on March 17, 1915, ultimately constituted a decisive element, for this organization, the September 20 and 21, 2025. An official ceremony will therefore be organized for this centenary in the presence of veterans.
Jean-Pierre Lucas also suggested renewing the request for classification of the monument (erected following a subscription on the tomb of Théophile Maupas, reburied in the cemetery on August 9, 1923), as a Historic Monument. That formulated in 2006 by the municipality of Sartilly remained a dead letter.
Appointments to note
Visits to the town, through its old businesses, and to the church with the preservation association created on June 27, would complement the program, which will be refined, between now and spring, during the preparatory meetings. The first should be held by the end of the year.
In addition to Heritage Days, the heritage section will offer a new cycle of conferences devoted to local history in the Montviron conviviality room. Two outings to discover heritage will also take place on Saturday March 29 in the Flers region (Orne) and June 14 in the Vitré region (Ille-et-Vilaine).
