Swiss universities are showing a slight decline in international comparison. However, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich remains the best university in continental Europe, according to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking.

The EPFZ remains in 7th place, behind six Anglo-Saxon establishments, in the hit parade of higher education institutions for the year 2025 published Tuesday by the analysis company based in London. Second best university in Switzerland, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) gained 10 places compared to the previous year, to rise to 26th place.

Among the ten Swiss institutes included in the ranking, three have progressed, six have declined, and one remains stable. The University of Zurich is no longer among the top 100 in the world: it has fallen 18 places to 109th. The Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) plummets to 405th place (-78).

The universities of Basel (131st), Geneva (155th), Bern (161st) and Lausanne (224th) are also losing ground. On the other hand, that of Friborg (539th) and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) (781st-790th) are progressing.

MIT in front

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) tops the international ranking, followed by Imperial College London and the University of Oxford. With the exception of ETH Zurich and the National University of Singapore (8th), the list of top ten universities is dominated by American and British institutions.

According to QS, this year’s ranking is the largest ever, with 1,500 universities included, from 105 higher education systems.
