The Gard Departmental Directorate for Population Protection (DDPP) is alerting consumers to the recent rise of stores operating under precarious leases in the department.
These brands, specializing in the sale of furniture, use aggressive commercial tactics and encourage consumers to make expensive purchases under the pretext of “exceptional” discounts which do not always correspond to real prices.
The process often begins with a phone call where the person is informed of a win: travel, gift basket or gift certificate. Then, a letter follows, inviting recipients to collect their prize in store, generally accompanied by their spouse. On site, consumers are offered their gift. But the real objective of sellers is to encourage rapid purchase of furniture, with salespeople trained to reassure potential buyers, using attractive discounts that are often misleading.
The DDPP du Gard recommends great caution and invites consumers not to be seduced by discounts that seem too good to be true. Comparing prices in other stores is strongly advised before making any purchasing decision.
If a purchase order is signed, the law protects consumers by imposing a seven-day period during which no payment or delivery can be made. This period allows buyers to reconsider their decision by sending a withdrawal form by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt, which cancels the order.
How to react
– Report any unsolicited call: People registered on the BLOCTEL list can note the caller's number and transmit it to the DDPP. The company then risks an administrative fine of up to 375,000 euros.
– In the event of a dispute or for more information: Consumers can also report suspicious practices on the official website: signal.conso.gouv.fr
