Swiss glaciers have started their melting season. But this year, the melting should be less significant than the previous two years, thanks to abundant precipitation.

“From now on, melting will dominate,” glaciologist Matthias Huss wrote on the X platform on Tuesday. According to him, the peak of snow accumulation was most likely reached on Monday.

This year, the weather has been a “blessing” for Swiss glaciers, according to the glaciologist. According to data from the Swiss glaciological survey network (GLAMOS), extrapolated to all 1,400 glaciers in Switzerland, there was around 31% more snow at the end of April than the average for the years 2010 to 2020. Since these measurements , the state of the glaciers has further improved, underlines Matthias Huss.

The melting of glaciers in 2024 is expected to be less than in the previous two years. During this period, Swiss glaciers lost a total of 10% of their ice. After the record loss of 6% in 2022, glacier ice has melted another 4% in 2023.
