Garonne AB and Saint-Médard ignited Pomarez

“We are at home, we are at home…” A few minutes before the grand final of the Super Coupe Sud Ouest, the essential Garonnais kop lends voice to the rhythm of the banda. In Pomarez, it’s a festive weekend for the GAB, which has now established itself in the heart of “The Mecca of Landes basketball”. The Meilhan-sur-Garonne club, regional champion last year, had only one objective in mind after its elimination in the quarter-finals of Nationale 2, Thursday evening: to retain its title on the arena puzzle, 48 hours later, against the Poudriers de Saint-Médard.

The Girondines Ambitions left the BEC Bordelaises no chance in the final of the Regional Women’s Cup.

To those who still doubted it, “it is not only the Landes who are interested in this cup”, smiled Pierre Dufau, president of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine League and Dacquois native, this week. This 2024 edition was no exception to the rule, with a 100% Gironde women’s final between the irresistible Ambiteuses (N2) and the Bordelaises du BEC (R1), followed by the N2 duel between the title holder Garonnais and the challenger Saint -medardais.

The faithful Garonnais kop gave voice and pushed his protégés throughout the weekend.

The Landais in front of the TV

Orphelins de l’Avenir Basket Chalosse – Petit Poucet and local of the stage (R1) – and Coteaux du Luy – a vice-champion of France in N3 dulled by a marathon season – both eliminated in the semi-finals the day before, the Landais were forced to watch the final from the sidelines or in front of the TV. A fact rare enough to be highlighted.

Despite the absence of Landes clubs, the regional finals brought together nearly 3,000 spectators this Saturday evening.

In the absence of the Chalois fans, Girondins and Garonnais were responsible for ensuring the atmosphere – as always deafening – in indoor arenas which were full to capacity despite everything (around 3,000 spectators). The green tide of Ambitions Girondines, who never gave hope for the BEC in raising the curtain (51-74), preceded that, yellow and blue, of some 250 supporters of the GAB. Despite the enthusiasm of a much less strong Saint-Médardais weigh-in, and while waiting for that of the field, Garonne AB had already won the battle of the stands this Saturday evening. Since he is now at home in Pomarez…
