[VIDÉO] Visit to Florence: an apartment at $1,050 per month in La Petite-Patrie

For two years, the team of Silo 57 launched the mission of crisscrossing the city of Montreal in search of small real estate or rental gems. Our goal? You open the doors of local people and discover their homes for a good dose of daily inspiration.

Does your apartment also attract praise? Enter it here.

This week, we visit Florence’s apartment (and her cat Tequila)!

Florence, a clinical nurse at the CHUM, has always been attracted by the excitement of Montreal. After leaving the family cocoon, she finally found her home in the metropolis. Passionate about health care, she plans to continue her studies to become a nurse practitioner next year. Outside of her demanding job, Florence savors every moment of her social life. She likes meeting up with her boyfriend and friends over a good drink, discovering new horizons while traveling, and recharging her batteries at yoga. She also enjoys spending time with family in Shefford, where she finds her parents. A lover of good wine, she is particularly fond of “little juices” like Gamay, and her past as a dancer makes her a fan of musical events. What a good living!

Q: How many rooms are there in your apartment?

On the lease, it is indicated 4 1/2, but it could be described as 3 1/2 “loft” style given that the accommodation does not have a closed room, with the exception of the bathroom.

Q: How long have you lived in this apartment?

I’ve lived there since April 2023, so it’s been a little over a year.

Q: How did you find this apartment?

One thing you should know about me, I’m still on Facebook Marketplace! [Rires] My sister is a real estate agent, my mother also loves houses. We are the three girls who are constantly looking at houses on the market, we have always been fans this side!

Even today, as soon as I get up in the morning, some go to TikTok, I look at the ads on Marketplace.

So, I was in bed one night at my dad’s house and I started looking at Facebook. I saw the apartment and fell in love with it, so I decided to send a message (which was the first message for an apartment I’ve sent in my entire life). I sent a photo of myself as a graduate, a photo of my cat Tequila, and I received a quick response from the owner couple. They had received more than 150 applications for the apartment.

Among the 4 people selected to visit, I was chosen! My owners are amazing and very caring, they live on the ground floor and respond to all my requests super quickly.

Q: What first charmed you?

I liked that it was already a bit turnkey, the ceilings were high, the walls were white. I just loved the space of the apartment! It’s really over time that I was able to personalize it in my own way.

Q: What is your favorite room in your apartment?

I’ll tell you it’s here! [En pointant vers le séjour] I really like my room too, but when I have all my friends over, we’re always in this open room. Otherwise, in the summer, we are often on my balcony, I really enjoy my outdoor space.

Q: What are your favorite pieces of furniture in your apartment?

Many people compliment my dining table! Otherwise, my mother gave me the teak cabinet in the entrance. It’s a crush that I always wanted to have, and she ended up “lending” it to me (I’m pretty sure she’s going to let me [Rires]).

Q: What are your favorite decoration stores? Where do you find your decorative items?

That’s a lot on Marketplace! Otherwise, a little shoutout to Tossed for my living room chair. My beige vase at the entrance comes from SUR LA TABLE, the wooden stool which comes from Denmark with the Italian lamp both come from Hochelaga Decoration. Fun fact, the stool was the first big vintage purchase of my life. It was my mother who made me realize that it was going to increase in value and that I was going to keep it all my life.

The posters in my living room, I found them at the gallery Every Month. It was the photographer Berto who took the photos. And the one in my room comes from the Le Livart art center boutique in Saint-Denis!

I also draw a lot of inspiration from Morceau, Les éclectics and Atelier 111 in the neighborhood.

I found my dining room setting at the Mamie bar. I walked into the bar shop and asked if the frame was for sale, I was told yesso I took it. [Rires]

Q: What inspired your decor?

My mother passed on to me a passion for decoration and vintage. So it really comes from her! I follow several design Instagram accounts in Copenhagen, because I love European style, especially Solebich. Otherwise, I often watch the content of Maison Singulier and Le Centerpiece.

Q: Does your apartment have a quirk (failure)?

The washer-dryer between my living room and my kitchen annoys me a little. The lack of storage too, but at least I have a room at the entrance which serves as a “catch-all” where I can put my things like skis and suitcases. I think it’s a perfect apartment for one person, but with two people, it’s starting to get tight!

Q: Why did you choose La Petite-Patrie?

My mother already lived on rue Fabre, and that’s how I fell in love with the neighborhood. My boyfriend’s aunt also lives nearby, which allowed me to discover him even more. The neighborhood is ideally located near the orange metro line and rue Beaubien with its restaurants.

I am also close to Little Italy and the Jean-Talon Market!

I really love the Vinvinvin buvette, and otherwise, the Mamie bar, the Ping Pong bar, and the Jeans Jeans Jeans store (big fan of jeans here!) are my favorites. The Atelier 111 boutique is really cute!

I also fell in love with Furusato Japanese Bistro! Great discovery.

We have also just opened the Augusta Café right next door on Bellechasse. People will be able to gather there and enjoy the sun.
