To deal with inflation and support farmers, the Department of the Somme is working alongside the most precarious Samarian households facing a rise in food prices: with the support of SOLAAL Hauts-de-France and the Chamber of Agriculture of the Somme, the Department finances and supports the establishment of a distribution of nearly 20,000 solidarity baskets, made up of 100% local products.

Supporting Samarian households in difficulty

Purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs… for some families, the increase in the cost of living can limit this type of expense. In order to give them a helping hand with their daily food purchases, the Department is starting the distribution of baskets of locally produced and seasonal foodstuffs.

Alongside the SOLAAL Hauts-de-France association, a recognized association of general interest whose mission is to facilitate and organize donations from the agricultural and food sectors, and the Somme Chamber of Agriculture, the Department de la Somme finances the distribution of nearly 20,000 “solidarity baskets”.

This operation has a dual objective:
· support the purchasing power of Samarians beneficiaries of food aid associations;
· contribute to the support and development of agriculture and the agricultural sectors of the Somme thanks to a supply of local products from the Somme for the composition of the baskets

After consulting the authorized food aid associations, the Department has chosen to distribute one basket per family of four people and two baskets per family of more than four people: in total, 19,393 baskets will be made.

The distribution of these baskets is carried out from this week until June 15, 2024, by 7 national associations authorized to receive and distribute the “baskets” either directly to the people welcomed, or to local branches of national food aid associations empowered.

These are the following charitable structures:
· the Somme Food Bank
· ANDES Solidarity grocery store “l’Atelier” (Blangy-sur-Bresle)
· ANDES Solidarity grocery store “Epi’Sol” of the CCAS de Roye (Roye)
· ANDES Solidarity grocery store “Sol’Epi” (Doullens)
· the Red Cross of Ponthieu (Rue)
· Restaurants in the heart of the Somme
· the Somme People’s Aid

Give taste to the local and support Samarian agriculture

Food insecurity is often marked by the virtual absence of consumption of fresh vegetables. Solidarity baskets allow people to obtain fruits and vegetables and integrate them into their diet.

Valued at €15, they are made up of agricultural products selected in partnership with the Somme Chamber of Agriculture.

Basket contents:

  • 1.5 kg of potato
  • 500 g onions
  • 500 g turnips
  • 1 kg of apples
  • 1 bottle of juice
  • 500 g lentils
  • 1 L of UHT milk
  • 1 kg of flour
  • 1 box of 6 eggs

23 local producers or suppliers are mobilized for this operation worth €300,000, financed by the Department.

The 23 producers who will supply the foodstuffs come from SAS Somme Produits Locaux. This is the company born in parallel with the “Somme Local Products” approach in order to structure the direct sales sector in the short circuit of farms. This collective structure of producers today brings together 69 associated producers mainly from the Somme department and neighboring territories.

For Stéphane Haussoulier, president of the Somme Departmental Council, “ This concrete operation intensifies the dynamic initiated by the Department with our local producers. This is an additional opportunity to promote their productions. I would like to thank the commitment of departmental elected officials and in particular my colleague Emmanuel Noiret, Vice-President in charge of agricultural development, food and rurality, as well as our partners, SOLAAL Hauts-de France and the Chamber of agriculture, for this implementation. We wanted a simple system, linked to the local agricultural fabric, for Samarians in difficulty. A win-win system, in Somme! »
