FIFA Vice President and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani officially opened the National U-13 Women’s Championship at the Guyana Football Federation National Training Center on Friday.

This exciting tournament brings together 40 primary schools from across the country, all seeking glory in a showcase of emerging talent.

Timed to coincide with Montagliani’s inaugural visit, the competition aims to promote greater involvement of women in sport, with a focus on the development of young athletes and the promotion of gender equality in football.

During her speech to aspiring young players, Montagliani said women’s football is not just a passing fad; rather, it is an integral part of the game today and will continue to thrive under his leadership. “In the world of football, there is an oft-repeated phrase at FIFA, suggesting that the future belongs to women’s football. However, I want to make it clear that it is not just about the future—it is indeed the present, and all of you here today are the illustration of this. Many of you dream of wearing the colors of your nation or reaching higher levels, but remember, football is a gift that. will enrich your life and connect you to a global community that could offer you a career in this sport, both on and off the field,” he remarked.

Montagliani highlighted the treasures of football, mentioning how the sport can open up many opportunities and experiences. He said: “This game is incredibly rewarding, and each and every one of you is privileged to take part in it. What’s more, you are fortunate to have access to facilities like these and a federation that advocates tirelessly. release for your interests. Watching you play inspires me to keep pushing for even more opportunities in our beloved sport.”

Wayne Forde, President of the GFF, highlighted the importance of continued investment in football, particularly for women’s programs which are gaining momentum. “In the coming weeks, we will formalize the structure of the U-13 National High School Football Championship. I look forward to seeing many of you demonstrate your talents in front of your classmates, parents and siblings, and I look forward to visiting the different venues hosting these exciting competitions,” added the GFF president.

The tournament will feature fierce competition between 40 school teams from five districts, with the federation’s coaching clusters preparing to work closely with the participants.
