A -Atlantique dairy, owned by a trio of cooperatives, is able to take back 40 million liters of milk from farms on the verge of losing their contract with Lactalis, the Terrena cooperative announced on Friday. “ Terrena is able, in its historic collection area (around 100 km around Ancenis), to collect 40 million liters of additional milk. This milk will be processed locally by the Val d’Ancenis dairy. », Indicates Terrena in a press release.

In France, the average production of dairy farms is 500,000 liters per year. This proposal could therefore offer a new outlet to dozens of farms. The multinational Lactalis (President, Lactel, Galbani), which claims the title of the world’s leading dairy group, announced on September 25 that it would gradually reduce its volumes collected in France by almost 9%.

There are around 300 farms – often run by several associated operators – which will no longer be collected by Lactalis in the east of France and around Vendée. Last week, the family business LSDH indicated to AFP that it could resume “ between 50 and 60 million liters » of milk per year to supply its factory in (Maine-et-Loire). Lactalis intends to offload a collection of around 450 million liters of milk.

Three processing professions

The Val-d’Ancenis dairy can “ offer long-term outlets to producers thanks to its three processing businesses (butter, cheese, milk powder and its Paysan Breton brand) », Indicates Christophe Miault, breeder of the department and administrator of Terrena, quoted in the press release. The dairy, historically owned by Terrena, is integrated into the subsidiary Laïta, which Terrena owns with two other cooperatives (Even and Eureden).
