the dark Abode of Chaos turns pink, “the color of appeasement and happiness”

In Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d’Or, the Demeure du Chaos is participating in the 2024 European Night of Museums. A nighttime visit this Saturday, May 18 from 8 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. Last entry on the site 11 p.m.

“Tonight, there is an incredible scenography with more than 800 spots and very fine LEDs, photo enthusiasts are in for a treat! Tonight, we will have hundreds of lighting points (…) When we see the Residence at night, it’s amazing”warns Thierry Ehrmann. At the gates of Lyon, the Abode of Chaos participates in the European Night of Museums. The site reopens its doors to the public on this occasion.

This former 17th century coaching inn, located in Saint-Romain-au-Mont-d’Or, was completely transformed under the leadership of Thierry Ehrmann, its current owner. The site, transformed into a contemporary art museum, today offers a 9000 m² museum tour. “It’s a unique place in the world. There are nearly 4,500 sculptures that I have created in 25 years. We are also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Abode of Chaos which reopens this evening”explains the artist and businessman from Lyon.

With its metal works, some of which can weigh up to several hundred tons, the “dark” side of the site has not always been unanimously appreciated. It also caused its creator some setbacks with the municipality. A conflict more than 20 years old.
Are tensions eased? Today, it is in any case the color pink, the color of “appeasement and happiness”, who has taken over the Abode of Chaos. A desire of its founder. Rock, monumental metal sculptures, plane from the Second World War, skulls… the works which populate the old post house have taken on a unique color. A message of peace more than a provocation for the founder of this open-air contemporary art museum.

The Abode of Chaos has always been ahead of its time. We were dark when the world was bright. Today, the world is literally sinking. And it’s never been so dark. But pink is also the color of pacifists.

In total, there are more than 6,000 works that the public can discover. This site completely dedicated to contemporary art which aims to be free, open and open to all. “It will be so even after my death, because there is a foundation”, assures Thierry Ehrmann. European Museum Night, which has been taking place since 2005, is the exceptional opening of museums for an evening in order to encourage new audiences to visit these institutions.

Culture, if not healing, can heal wounds.

The 2024 edition of the European Night of Museums once again aims to introduce the public to a world that they do not necessarily know. For the Lyon artist, the Abode of Chaos fulfills this role. “We open to the public, it’s culture for everyone. Many contemporary art centers, and not only in France, are difficult to approach. People are shy. Here, visitors can touch the works. There has something carnal and physical”adds Thierry Ehrmann.

Last year, 7,500 visitors took advantage of the event to discover this incredible museum. The creator of the Abode of Chaos intends to organize events every month.
