For “the national day for the rejection of poverty” which will be held on October 17, the Secours populaire de la Gironde is launching its major departmental collection. An operation which makes it possible to direct “donors to the most necessary products”, in particular long-life foods, hygiene and baby products.

“This campaign mobilizes 1,600 volunteers and 35 structures to collect donations in supermarkets throughout the department. It is both a grouping of visibility for the public and for us of volume. During this weekend, we will collect between 40 and 50 tonnes of products. » underlines the departmental general secretary, Denis Laulan.

Solidarity

In 2023, 18,747 people benefited from food aid delivered by Secours populaire in Gironde. The needs now affect social categories hitherto unknown to the association:

“We discovered the students during Covid, particularly on the campus where Secours populaire is not really established. We essentially provide them with intangible solidarity, access to rights… No food aid, because that is the role of the Crous and other associative structures,” emphasizes Denis Laulan.

For the association, this situation motivates the creation of a mobile antenna in Gironde, the “Solidaribus”. It will be launched in November and tasked with going “to rural areas, to campuses, to places where Secours populaire does not have fixed premises”.

The latest Ipsos survey carried out in 2024 on the poverty and precariousness of the French revealed that “57% of the rural population encounters difficulties going on vacation, 44% of people in rural areas have difficulty accessing health care”.
