In these times when almost everything costs more, between rising prices at the grocery store and rising rents, many Quebec families may need a helping hand to provide for the needs of their children. Fortunately, they have the opportunity to turn to help from the federal government thanks to the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), available these days in October.

This program is intended to provide financial support to low-income families, both single parents and couples, to support the education and development of young people.

It’s worth taking a look through My Account for individuals from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to find out how much you’re entitled to each month.

Am I entitled to the Canada Child Benefit?

People with one or more children under 18 are eligible. You must also be responsible for the care and education of the child. In addition, it is necessary to provide proof of birth for each child since November 2023.

Please note that you are not eligible for this allowance for a child in foster care if you receive special allowances for children (ESA).

How much can I get from the Canada Child Benefit?

The annual amount of this allowance can reach more than $7,000 per year, depending on the age of the young people and the income of the parents or those responsible for the care and education of the child. Since July 2024, the CRA has recalculated the amount of payments based on your income from the previous year.

For example, if your family income is less than $36,502 per year, you could claim the maximum amount for:

  • A child under 6 years old: $7,787 per year ($648.91 per month)
  • A young person between 6 and 17 years old: $6,570 per year ($547.50 per month)

Please note that payments gradually decrease when your income exceeds $36,502 annually.

Parents in shared custody receive 50% of the amount (based on their adjusted net family income) that each of them would receive in the case of full custody of the child. According to the ARC, you are considered in this situation when:

  • your child spends his time approximately equally with you and another individual (between 40% and 60%);
  • the young person lives mainly under your roof;
  • the child lives with you temporarily (for example, during the summer).

When should I receive the Canada Child Benefit?

Tax-free monthly payments take place each month. Here are the next dates to watch out for between now and the end of the year:

  • October 18, 2024
  • November 20, 2024
  • December 13, 2024
