Never before in Switzerland has a woman taken charge of the medical direction of a university hospital. It is now ancient history: on Thursday, the HUG board of directors appointed Professor Klara Pósfay Barbe medical director of the establishment. In a press release released this Friday, the director general of the HUG, Robert Mardini, declared himself “extremely proud that the HUG is marking the history of Switzerland (…). This is a significant step forward for our institution and a powerful symbol of progress and equality in the healthcare sector.”
As the HUG explains, “the medical director embodies medical authority and has the mission of guaranteeing the quality and safety of the medical services offered. She is responsible, in particular, for clinical research and postgraduate training. It approves the medical and therapeutic practices of medical services and units.”
Klara Pósfay Barbe, 56, succeeds Professor Arnaud Perrier, who is retiring. Trained in Geneva, she was until now deputy medical director, chief physician of the general pediatrics department and full professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva. His main research interests relate to immunocompromised patients, particularly transplanted children.
