Children are often told not to overuse video games. We strongly recommended them! Some seniors from (Seine-et-Marne) had the opportunity to participate in workshops, organized throughout the month of September 2024during which they played not, as we like to think, bridge or dice, but video games.

The key is a physical activitybut also interactions sociales.

A way of doing sport

In a room of the Lucien-Mayaudoux residence, a few seniors are gathered in front of a television. On the screen, contrary to what some evil tongues might imagine, no More beautiful life and other serials. Nay! They are actually playing the Switch, Nintendo’s latest home console. On the screen, fitness classes, or even a tennis match and a competition of bowling.

But be careful! Don’t think it was just a matter of lasciviously pressing a single button. Forget the quiet part of Mario Karthere, we sweat. Compress a ring to work the arms, imitate throwing the ball by achieving large shoulder movements, bending to hit as many pins as possible… the activity is physical. And that is all that was sought. “ It’s not just a gamethis also allows you to work on coordination between the eyes and hands, or cognitive abilities and the memory For example. It also helps with self-esteem: I managed to do that,” explains Michel Gueguenmunicipal councilor delegated, among others, to seniors.

Moreover, sessions take place regularly throughout the year, often with results.

A friendly atmosphere

Besides the sporting aspect, or at least the physical activity, these sessions had a real advantage: that of making these Torceans get to know each other. This is the case for this bubbly senior, who goes by the nickname Dani. “This allows us to change our mindsto know something else. And then, we meet peopleit’s always nice,” smiles the woman who had never played video games before these sessions. “It’s a great discovery for me! », she laughs.

In the room, the atmosphere is good. Between the different parties, laughter and smiles burst forth, looks sparkle. That’s also the magic of games, creating moments of joy.

And while some play, others comment on the performances, and even talk about their lives. The proof, Danie notably recounts her day as a spectator of the Paralympic Games. An exchange forms between them.

Everyone is won over by the initiative, and even admits to doing a good physical exercise after the session. And, who knows, maybe one of these days they will form a team for the eWeek Torcy festival – a town hall project – and compete with the teenagers…
