SENEGAL-SECURITE-SOCIETE / Saint-Louis: the governor insists on the importance of controlling the borders – Senegalese press agency

Saint-Louis, Oct 9 (APS) – The governor of the Saint-Louis region (north), Al Hassan Sall, insisted Wednesday on the importance of controlling the drawing of borders for the advent of lasting peace between neighboring countries, particularly between Senegal and Mauritania.

”The first factor for peace at the border is control of the route, exact control of the situation at the border,” he said. .

Al Hassan Sall was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the opening of the regional workshop to develop the national border governance policy (PNGF). The meeting was held in the Ibrahima Sakho conference room of the Saint-Louis governance.

“Once this route is mastered and known to all and all stakeholders comply with it, we will avoid incidents and allow everyone to freely go about their business with perfect knowledge of the demarcation lines,” said Mr. Sall.

He stressed that “our fishermen are often faced with problems with the Mauritanian authorities because quite simply there is a vagueness surrounding our border, the construction of certain hydraulic infrastructures by dedicated services is sometimes faced with problems on the part Mauritanian”.

He considered that this workshop organized by the National Border Management Commission comes at the right time to resolve these kinds of difficulties.

The governor indicated that this meeting is all the more important as the two countries are moving towards the management of the gas resources they share.

This regional workshop for the development of the national border policy on the recommendation of the African Union aims to collect the opinions of the actors of Saint-Louis, for his part explained Colonel Amadou Ndir, of the CNGF, a service housed at the presidency of the Republic.

“All local elected officials, administrative agents and projects and programs involved in the management of the border with Mauritania are invited to express their concerns,” he launched, recalling that the workshop “aims to collect information specific to the region in order to have a peaceful and prosperous border with our neighbors.

Colonel Ndir indicated that the next step will be the compilation of all regional workshops with a view to holding a presentation and validation workshop before the active phase of developing the PNGF.

“We would like to finish the development by the end of the year or at the latest in the first quarter of 2025,” he declared.

The workshop is part of the African Union strategy on border governance and national political orientations and aims to strengthen the provision of public services, the enhancement of economic opportunities and the establishment of sustainable security .
