The debate on wearing the veil in schools is resurfacing. However, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko had clearly indicated that the State would “no longer tolerate” such restrictions. But this Tuesday, at Cours Sainte-Bernadette (Dakar), a girl was prevented from taking her lessons because of her veil.

“I have just been informed that my daughter has been prevented from attending classes at Cours Sainte-Bernadette school. The reason given, when I asked the question, was that the supervisor had asked my daughter to remove her veil,” confided a desperate mother to our colleagues at PressAfriK. “What is certain is that this morning, I told my daughter not to remove her veil if it was forced on her.”

Remember that in September 2019, around twenty young veiled girls from the Sainte-Jeanne d’Arc Institute in Dakar were forced to demand “an uncovered head” for the students.

The school version: “The student knew that the veil was forbidden.”

The mother of the girl banned from sailing spoke with the school prefect (headmaster), who did not want to comment on this matter. He explains that if the school had known at the time of registration that the girl was veiled, she would not have been accepted. Better, the school ensures that the student knew that the veil was prohibited in this establishment.

The mother in turn clarified that her daughter veiled herself during the holidays.
