The Swiss Rabies Center detected the rabies virus in a bat of the Daubenton’s Murin species found in the canton of Glarus. Since 1992, only seven cases have been diagnosed in Switzerland.
The bat living in aquatic environments was found in Mühlehorn, in the municipality of Glarus-Nord, the Graubünden Food Safety and Animal Health Office, also responsible for the canton of Glarus, said on Monday. The discovery dates from September 20.
Switzerland is considered free from rabies, both in domestic and wild animals, the press release continued. Isolated cases in bats may nevertheless occur.
The Graubünden Food Safety and Animal Health Office reminds us not to touch wild animals that are sick or exhibiting abnormal behavior. You should inform the game warden or the Bat Protection Foundation.
There is no reason for the population to worry, according to the canton. If you are bitten by a bat, you should seek medical attention immediately.
