In Israel, the difficult first anniversary of October 7
Israel is preparing to commemorate the first anniversary of the October 7 massacres, an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on Israeli soil, which resulted in the deaths of 1,205 people, mostly civilians. A speech to the nation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected during the day.
On Sunday, thousands of people gathered around the world to pay tribute to the victims, and to demand the release of hostages still in captivity in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas for its part welcomed the “glorious” attack of October 7 which “shattered the illusions that the enemy had created, convincing the world and the region of its superiority and its supposed capabilities”.
New strikes in Lebanon and operations in Gaza
After a year of war which left tens of thousands dead and the failure of all attempts at mediation, the Israeli offensive continues in the besieged and devastated Gaza Strip, where the army announced on Sunday that it was carrying out operations in the north.
