Aliou Cissé remains an emblematic figure of Senegalese football, both as a player and a coach. A native of Ziguinchor, he had a notable playing career, playing notably in and Europe. After his retirement, he devoted himself to training and became the assistant of the Senegalese national team.

Cissé took the reins of the Senegal national team in 2015, at a time when the team was seeking to reassert itself on the African and international scene. His appointment coincides with a period of transition, when Senegal has a reservoir of promising talent.

His start at the head of the team was not easy. Expectations are high, especially after failures in previous major competitions. Cissé must build a strong team, capable of competing with the best African nations. He focuses on team cohesion and the integration of young talents like Sadio Mané and Kalidou Koulibaly.

In 09 years at the head of the Lions, Cissé led 93 matches, for a record of 60 victories, 22 draws and only 12 defeats. Indeed, under his leadership, Senegal qualified for the 2017 African Cup of Nations (CAN), where the team reached the quarter-finals. Cissé demonstrates his tactical abilities, but also his human management, creating an environment where players feel valued and motivated.

Consecration

In 2019, he led Senegal to the CAN final, marking a significant step forward for Senegalese football. Although the team lost to Algeria, the performance was praised and strengthened Cissé’s reputation.

The highlight of his career comes in 2022, when Senegal wins the CAN for the first time in its history. This victory in Cameroon is the result of hard work and a clear vision. Cissé is celebrated not only for his strategy, but also for his ability to handle pressure and unite the team around a common goal.

It must be said, Aliou Cissé was able to transform the national team into a formidable force on the African continent. His balanced style of play, based on defensive discipline and rapid attacks, appealed to football fans. He has become a symbol of hope for many young Senegalese footballers.

However, at a certain point, many experts and the Senegalese in general no longer understood his playing system. The elimination by Côte d’Ivoire during the last African Cup of Nations aroused the ire of supporters and members of the federation. Today, he is dismissed, and several names have already been put forward for his succession at the head of the Senegal national team.
