SENEGAL-HEALTH-OBJECTIVES / “Pink October”: Lisca wants to screen 15,000 women (president) – Senegalese press agency

Dakar, Oct 6 (APS) – The Senegalese League for the Fight against Cancer (Lisca) aims to screen 15,000 women throughout the national territory during the “Pink October” campaign, an initiative dedicated to the fight against breast cancer, launched on October 1, the APS learned from its president.

”This year, we aim to screen 15,000 women in Dakar and the regions. Last year, out of a target of 10,000 women, we consulted 12,000,” said Doctor Fatma Guenoune on Saturday, during the free screening day for women organized by the telephone company Expresso at their headquarters in Dakar.

The president of Lisca reassures that if lesions are detected, all these women will be supported by Lisca thanks to their partner.

”If we exceed, so much the better, because we want more women to be screened for breast cancer because it is a disease that is always expensive to treat. And when women reach advanced stages, unfortunately, we can only accompany them towards death. This is what we don’t want,” explained the practitioner.

“We cannot prevent the occurrence of cancer, but once cancer is diagnosed very early, we can cure women,” she reassures.

According to the president of Lisca, there are endogenous factors and exogenous factors linked to breast cancer.

”For endogenous factors, these are predispositions. This is when we see periods before 12 years, early puberty, late menopause after 55 years. In this case, we have to be careful,” she explained.

”When you come from a family with cancer, you also have to be very careful. Obesity and fat promote hyperestrogen, which is a contributing factor to cancer. Girls must marry early, have children early, because late pregnancies are not protective factors,” argued Doctor Guenoune.

The president of Lisca mentions other exogenous factors including hormone replacement therapy.

”All women who are menopausal, to avoid the inconveniences of this menopause, take these hormones which are carcinogenic. There are natural methods to avoid the discomforts of menopause. Therefore, taking contraceptives for a long time increases a slight risk of developing cancer,” she warned.

The espresso telephone company had organized two days of caravan in Dakar and its suburbs, thanks to a donation of 6 million to support Lisca, we learned from the organizers.
