Gas cookers are on the verge of disappearing: these “old school” cookers can be powered by town gas (butane) or by bottled gas (propane). But although they are appreciated by kitchen professionals, gas stoves are nonetheless generally bad for your health. Several scientific studies have thus highlighted increased risk of cancer (leukemia, in particular) and asthma (especially in children).

A new study, carried out by the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability (in the United States), drives home the point once again. American researchers studied air samples from 100 American homes equipped with a gas stove.

Small apartments are particularly at risk

They thus discovered that, in these places of life, the atmospheric rates of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were abnormally high. “ The concentration of NO2 was constantly too high in these homes, even when the gas stove was not in use! » specify the scientists.

American researchers even estimate that gas stoves could be responsible for 19,000 deaths in the United States each year. Please note: gas stoves are particularly dangerous for health in small apartments (less than 75 square meters), where nitrogen dioxide mathematically tends to be more concentrated in the air…

Do you cook with gas and can’t afford to invest in an electric stove? Scientists recommend that you ventilate your living space as often as possible – and use a ventilation system (e.g. a hood) when cooking. Easy !
