The Mediator of the Republic Demba Kandji is for better land regulation. In this context, he calls for in-depth reflections regarding the sector. The mediator of the Republic expressed these ideas during a workshop on land. A meeting organized by the Mediator of the Republic, in collaboration with the Association of Former Governors, civil society movements, the Association of Village Chiefs and other stakeholders in the silvopastoral zone.

So he continues, “Senegal’s major concern is the land. Where to live? Where to cultivate? So, we undertook this reflection to try, within the framework of our powers of proposal and suggestion, to establish guidelines to be entrusted to those who decide. Therefore, the aim of this workshop is to make proposals aimed at resolving for good the “nebulae” surrounding land.

This meeting, according to Mr. Kandji, “is initiated with regard to complaints which are more or less recurrent in relation to land alienations in rural areas of which farmers complain and for which the mediator is contacted by local elected officials and agents of the “administration”. Hence, “the need to protect rural land”, he insisted.
The latest events, namely the cessation of construction on the Western Corniche of Dakar, have sharpened curiosity about this land affair. And for the Mediator of the Republic the West Corniche ”is only a small strip compared to what is happening in the country”. On this, the land focal point of the National Framework for Consultation and Cooperation of Rural People (CNCR) and the Framework for Reflection on Land in Senegal, Babacar Diop does not beat around the bush. For him, we must move towards consensual, participatory and inclusive land reform.
