The harsh law of nature struck in Sarralbe (Moselle). Three of the six storks born in this nest located on the roof of the town hall and permanently filmed by a webcam are deaths following heavy rainfall of the last days.

It must be said that the sensors recorded more than 30 mm of water, who soaked the nest and refrigerated the chicks. “As much as the parents tried to protect them, they couldn’t do anything”explains Dominique Klein, the Mr. Stork who watches over this nest. “Nature is harsh, but we must accept it.”

Storks fragile when they change their down

In a position on the Facebook page that manages the webcamhe adds : “Storks have little defense against nature and especially the weather. After a week, the birth down disappears and gives way to a second down, that of a chick. For a few days, they are naked and very sensitive The adults protect them as best they can, but with such quantities of water and with soaked plumage, the last born don’t have much hope.”

Three of the six storks of the bird couple Maurice and Mélodie have succumbed to the cold in recent days. Under the weight of the water, other nests fell in places. This is not the first time that the weather has decimated broods. In 2017, heavy rainfall followed by an episode of frost cost the lives of all storks weighing less than one kilo over a large area in Moselle.
