Cultural events dedicated to the memory of Senegalese footballer Jules-François Bocandé, who died on May 7, 2012, are planned in Ziguinchor and Sédhiou (south), from Tuesday to May 11, according to the organizers.

These activities aim to “celebrate the exceptional contribution of Jules-François Bocandé to Senegalese sport”, underlines a press release from Linkering Productions and Mama Human Project Development. They also represent an opportunity “to pay tribute to this legendary man, whose passion for football was the unwavering testimony of his deep attachment to his native land, Casamance, and his commitment to his country, Senegal”, adds the press release.

The program will begin Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Alliance Française in Ziguinchor with a round table entitled “The legacy of Essamaay” (the lion, in Diola), which will be moderated by Nouha Cissé, historian and former president of Casa Sports, and the journalist Abdoulatif Diop, author of the book “Bocandé, the eternal legend”. This round table aims to raise awareness among a young audience who “know little about Jules-François Bocandé”, according to the organizers. It will be followed by the opening of an exhibition of unpublished photographs of the footballer, who died in Metz, in France, at the age of 53 years.

On Wednesday May 8 at 8 p.m., the Kadiadoumagne hotel in Ziguinchor will screen the documentary “Essamaay, Bocandé la panthère”, directed by Maky Madiba Sylla and Lionel Bourqui. On Thursday, the Independence Square in Sédhiou will host a screening of the same documentary, which will be presented to the public again on May 11 at the Aline-Sitoé-Diatta crossroads in Ziguinchor.
