In Occitaniethere Lozère and Gers are among the least well-off departments. But in Tarn-et-Garonne too, the doctors are not numerous enough. In 2023, according to INSEE study249 doctors practiced there per 100,000 inhabitants (the regional average being 351 doctors).

Not enough generalists or specialists

In detail, for generalists, there are 123 per 100,000 inhabitants (compared to 157 in Occitania); and for the specialists, there are 126 per 100,000 inhabitants (compared to 193 in Occitania). The figures concerning the dentists and the pharmacists are also below the regional average.

A significant part of the population is far from main medical services, particularly in the Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, Négrepelisse and Lafrançaise basins. In Tarn-et-Garonne, 20% of the population lives more than 30 minutes from a maternity ward (15% in Occitanie) and 10% more than 30 minutes from an emergency service (8% in the region ).

INSEE

An aging population

And this observation is not expected to improve. In question: the Aging of the populationand that of the doctors themselves.

According to projections, the number of inhabitants aged 75 or over would reach 17% of the population in 2040 compared to 11% in 2020. This aging of the population will increase the need for care while the supply today is low.

Finally, the question of generational renewal doctors arise: in the department, four general practitioners, and more than three out of ten specialists are 60 years old or over.
