The Indre-et-Loire departmental council launches a recruitment campaign for host families

Guest of France Bleu Touraine, this Tuesday, May 7, the vice-president of the Indre-et-Loire departmental council in charge of prevention and child protection, believes that the profession of family caregiver suffers from a crisis of vocation. However, the Department is looking for around a hundred.

“Change a child’s life, become a foster family”. This is the slogan of a recruitment campaign launched by the departmental council of Indre-et-Loire, end of April. The community, of which child protection is one of its responsibilities, has all the difficulty in the world to find host families – it would take a hundred, in the best of all possible worlds -, while the number of children in care continues to increase. “As of October 31, 2023, we had 1,613 children entrusted to child welfare, including 569 in family care”assures Valérie Jabot, vice-president of the Department in charge of prevention and child protection.

The elected official speaks of a crisis of vocation for this social profession. To take care of minors and young adults, with damaged life pathscan be frightening, it’s true. “You have to have strong backs”, concedes Valérie Jabot. But the game is worth it, she says. “Children entrusted to child welfare are wonderful children, they just need to be loved. They just haven’t had the chance to grow up in family conditions that can allow them to grow up normally .”
