An attack on a hospital in China’s Yunnan province (southwest) left at least 10 people dead or injured on Tuesday, state news agency Xinhua reported, without specifying for the moment the nature of the attack.

Footage published by state news site The Paper showed a man pointing a knife at another individual wielding a stick in a hospital lobby, as well as police officers arriving at the scene.

The events “occurred in a local hospital” on Tuesday and “more than 10 people were injured or killed,” said the New China news agency.

The attack took place in Zhenxiong County, in northeastern Yunnan, and authorities are investigating, according to the same Source.

“It happened around 11 a.m. (3 a.m. GMT) (…) it’s still a little confusing,” a resident told The Paper media.

Mass crimes are rare in China, a country that prohibits its citizens from owning firearms, but a wave of stabbing attacks has been seen in recent years.

In August in Yunnan, two people died and seven others were injured in a knife attack carried out by a man with a history of mental illness.

The previous month, six people were killed and another injured in a stabbing attack, this time at a kindergarten in the southern province of Guangdong.

In August 2022, three people lost their lives and six others were injured during a knife attack at a kindergarten in Jiangxi (southeast).
