A freight train and a van collided on a level crossing in the port area of Antwerp on Friday afternoon, says rail network manager Infrabel. Although the van was dragged several meters, the driver of the vehicle was only slightly injured.
The accident occurred on a level crossing on the Oosterweelsteenweg. As with almost all level crossings in this area, there are no barriers, but traffic lights. The driver of the van allegedly ignored a red light.
Another fatal accident at a level crossing!
As the images from our colleagues at Laatste Nieuws show, the material damage caused by the collision is considerable. The van remained stuck under the locomotive and firefighters had to intervene to clear the tracks. As the locomotive was no longer able to operate, another machine had to be mobilized.
