Asian hornet: Vaud civil protection called for help

For great ills there are great remedies. “In order to gain momentum in the fight against the Asian hornet” in the canton of Vaud, the General Directorate of the Environment (DGE) has called on the Vaud Civil Protection (PCi) since this summer, he said. she revealed on Friday. Under the direction of the specialist hired by the Canton, Daniel Cherix, and his teams, 35 members of the PCi have participated in several operations in recent months. A collaboration which seems to have borne fruit, since “some 80 nests have been destroyed since this summer”.

If these destructions were carried out, it is because they “contribute to the preservation of the local ecosystem”, specified the DGE. Indeed, the Asian hornet is a “particularly invasive species, capable of reproducing very quickly, which attacks orchards and bees, impacting local biodiversity and the agricultural economy”. The number of nests in the canton of Vaud has also exploded in recent years, going from 4 in 2022 to around a hundred this year, “while the Asian hornet season has not yet come to an end”.
