Yann Gérard is the new secretary general of the Gard prefecture and sub-prefect of the Nîmes district. A true right-hand man of the prefect, he took office this Monday, May 6.

This Monday morning, at the square of November 11, 1918, Yann Gérard carried out the traditional laying of wreaths at the war memorial in the presence of civil and military authorities. Under a fine rain, undoubtedly reminding him of his native Brittany, the ceremony marked his official assumption of duty as new secretary general of the Gard prefecture and sub-prefect of the district of Nîmes.

Aged 48, Yann Gérard has worked in the prefecture and within different ministries. He began his career at the Ministry of the Interior where he, among other things, worked on foreigners’ rights. It was in Yvelines that he continued his professional adventure as head of the interministerial defense and civil protection service before occupying a position in the cabinet of Myriam El Khomri, Minister of Labor under the presidency of François Hollande. . Following these different professional experiences, the new secretary general of the Gard prefecture then moved into the prefectural body, occupying different positions, in La Rochelle, Paris, and Eure-et-Loire.

“The men of the last mile”

The secretary general of the prefect has three major missions, he explained this Monday during a press conference: “The first is obviously, as the right arm of the prefect, to lead the collective of the State in the department, to implement public policies on a territorial scale, adapting them so that they are truly effective. To do this, I work with interministerial departmental directors and all state services. In fact, he sums up, we are a bit like the men of the last mile. Second, also manage the prefecture, from human resources to budgetary means. He runs the shop to put it simply. Finally, the third major mission is that he has the role of district sub-prefect, allowing him to be as close as possible to realities on the ground, to work with local authorities, businesses and associations.”

Economic development, employment, the environment, and even foreigners’ rights, these will therefore be the major issues that the new secretary general will have to deal with.
