These are facts that were mentioned during the municipal council meeting of April 30, 2024 of the municipality of Vairé.
The stadium of the small town of the Sables-d’Olonne conurbation was almost taken over by caravans of travelers.
Armed with the authorization they had obtained in 2023, the travelers, returning to Vairé this year, had in fact intended to install their caravans, on the land adjoining the football field, like the last year, but this time completely illegally.
On Monday April 29, the mayor, Michel Chailloux, was in a meeting with the first deputy, Nathalie Lucas.
It was a resident who immediately raised the alarm when he saw the procession of caravans arriving.
Blocked caravans
The travelers had just entered the football field. Immediately, the mayor and his first assistant quickly went to the site, to block the convoy, with the only means at their disposal: themselves and their vehicles. They positioned themselves in front of the eight caravans, who had not had time to return to join the first two vehicles which had already invited themselves.
The two elected officials thus blocked access, forcing unwanted caravans to stop their progress, with the firm intention of not moving while waiting for the police, called to the rescue.
After a good hour of heated discussion, the travelers left the area, not without difficulty.
Block access
The mayor clarified during the municipal council:
» We had decided to put piles of earth, recovered during the work on the Rabelais room on Monday, but bad weather delayed the technical team. It was then in an emergency that the decision was taken to install our old cement electrical poles, across the passage, waiting for a better solution, and a more clement climate.
