The Montgeron Local History Society (SHLM) keeps the history of the municipality alive over time. Created in 1979 by a humanist passionate about history, the latter was looking for a history-geography teacher who could carry out historical research in the town of Montgeron.

This role will be entrusted to Michel Chancellor who sets up a history committee the year before an association under the 1901 law was set up in 1987. From 2004, it is Renaud Arpin, historian and professor of history and geography who will be at the head of the SHLM before giving his place ten years later to Elisabeth Bazinteacher and historian.

“Those who get involved are rare”

“The role of the Montgeron Local History Society is to update, deepen, share and transmit local history as well as to defend, preserve and safeguard the architectural and artistic heritage and the testimonies about our past,” explains the president. of the association with 100 memberswith a board of directors of eight members.

To bring the Montgeron structure to life on a daily basis, the SHLM offers conferences on local history, art history and national history, an annual outing in the Paris region on a historical themea publication of an annual bulletin with in-depth articles and specific themes, two fun meetings, a monthly article in the municipal newspaper, as well as monthly coverage.

The 2024 program promises to be busy for the SHLM with a conference on the history of the Sénart forest, the historical figures who chose Essonne, historical themes on Virginie Demont Breton as well as Maurice Schumann, the voice of London. An exit outside the borders of the department is also planned in Villers-Cotterêts (Aisne). A book on the streets of Montgeron is also in progress.

However, the SHLM must face certain problems common to many associations. “Those who get involved are rare and young retirees are non-existent. Those who attend our conferences are satisfied, but do not invest more than that afterwards,” regrets Elisabeth Bazin.
