It is the Italians who now find themselves in trouble. This Sunday, May 5, 2024, at the end of a challenge started at dawn, 18 bakers from Hauts-de-Seine managed to beat the record for the longest baguette in the world, held since 2019 by our transalpine friends, with 132, 63 m.

Approved by a “Guinness” inspector

Shaped by the National Confederation of French Bakery and Pastry, the event organized in Suresnes on the Terrasse du Fécheray allowed a 140.53 m long specimen to be taken out of the oven, under the amazed eyes of the public.

A footage approved by an official inspector from the “Guinness Book of Records”, confirms Paris news a city representative.

The pressure was enormous for the competitors, eager to bring home the record, the “artisanal know-how and culture of the baguette” having been included in 2022 on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity of Unesco.

152 kilos of dough

To achieve the feat, it took a total of ten hours, 90 kilos of flour, 60 liters of water, 1.2 kilos of salt and 1.2 kilos of yeast (152 kilos of dough in total). This giant baguette also had to follow the rules of the art with the only ingredients being wheat flour, water, yeast and salt. It also had to reach a diameter of at least 5 cm over its entire length.

“A record for the longest artisanal baguette requires a real collective sporting spirit, in this year of the Olympics, well done to all our artisan bakers,” greeted Dominique Anract, president of the National Confederation of French Bakery and Pastry.

At the end of cooking, the baguette was partly cut, spread with Nutella and shared with the public. Another part was entrusted to the Suresnes association Celije to be distributed the same evening, during a maraude it organizes among homeless people.
