Ineco wins its largest contract in Morocco

Ineco participates in the urban development of Morocco by developing railway works which will improve connectivity between the cities of Tangier and Tetouan. The Spanish national company will also be responsible for connections with football stadiums, in view of the 2030 World Cup, and the airport in the city of Tangier.

The choice of Ineco by the Alawite administration is part of the good relations between the two countries. In addition to urban development work, the company will be responsible for the feasibility study of a new train line linking the city of Tangier to Tetouan.

The contract was awarded in part thanks to the official trip of the Spanish Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, who conveyed to the Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Abdeljalil, and the Minister of Infrastructure and Water, Nizar Baraka, the intentions of Spanish companies to work and collaborate with Moroccan companies in the field of transport.

The National Railway Office (ONCF) has awarded a contract for a period of 14 months. Ineco, in collaboration with the local company CID, will focus on the analysis of four main aspects: the expansion of the Tangier-Mellousa line and the creation of a new route to Chefarrat; the evaluation of the possible construction of a conventional line connecting the south of Tangier to the football stadium (venue of the 2030 World Cup), the airport and Gueznaia; the connection of this corridor with the industrial zone of Mohammed VI; and the establishment of a rail connection between Tetouan and Cherrafat.

This project is part of the Moroccan Railway Strategy 2040 (PRM2040), which is a long-term plan aimed at improving the country’s railway network and its different parts, depending on the transport needs that arise in the future.

PRM2040 will strengthen the transportation network connecting key nodes through high-speed trains, regional trains and shuttle trains, thereby promoting development across the country and supporting territorial development policies.

The plan aims to increase rail connectivity in Morocco from 23 to 43 cities and connect a dozen ports and 15 airports, with a budget of 375 billion dirhams (around 34.7 billion euros). The country plans to create 300,000 jobs and develop public transport to reach 87% of the population, compared to 51% today.

“This contract is our first railway project in Morocco and consolidates our presence in this country where we already work in the airport sector. This is an important step that we hope will continue to open up opportunities for the Spanish railway industry,” said Sergio Vázquez Torrón, President of Ineco.

It is important that this step is maintained over time so that the Spanish railway industry has more opportunities. This project represents the largest contract in the company’s history in Morocco and paves the way for collaboration with the CID.

The National Airports Office of Morocco (ONDA) contacted Ineco to develop a plan to improve the facilities and terminals of Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport.

The contract also includes the construction of 85 kilometers of new tracks and requires studies for railway operation until 2040, taking into account the connection with the existing network. The aim is to identify current problems, define the size and design of the infrastructure needed to cope with increased air traffic in the future.
