22 migrants were rescued off the coast of Calais this Saturday morning, May 4, while they were attempting to cross the Channel.

A rescue operation was carried out early in the morning of Saturday May 4, off the coast of Calais (Pas-de-Calais). 22 migrants were rescued at sea while attempting to cross the Channel, the Channel and North Sea maritime prefecture said in a press release.

The Gris-Nez regional operational surveillance and rescue center (CROSS) was informed that a migrant boat was in difficulty off the coast of Calais. A rescue ship then picked up the 22 people. A helicopter also flew over the area to ensure “no other people were in difficulty”.

The castaways were then taken care of by the land rescue services and the border police.

The maritime prefect of the Channel and the North Sea “warns anyone who plans to cross the Channel about the risks involved”.

According to figures from the British Interior Ministry published Thursday, May 2, 711 migrants, on 14 boats, crossed the stretch of sea that separates Great Britain from Western Europe on Wednesday, May 1. The previous record for 2024, on April 14, saw 534 people make the perilous crossing.
