Senegal: Prime Minister announces measures to support agriculture

Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announced the first concrete measures during an interministerial council dedicated to the 2024-2025 agricultural campaign. In total, 23 measures were taken to make agriculture “the essential lever of economic development” and “the main engine of economic growth”.
The head of government asked the Minister of Agriculture, Mabouba Diagne, to “take the necessary measures to settle the State’s debt to operators” concerning fertilizers, phytosanitary products and seeds.
He then called on him to take all measures “for the effective start of the distribution of inputs […] as soon as possible “. “I urge the Minister responsible for Agriculture to ensure the implementation of inputs under conditions of strict transparency with the real rights holders, ensuring that any misappropriation is identified and punished,” he declared.
The government also announced the digitalization of seed distribution. To do this, it intends to “establish an identifier for each producer benefiting from the State subsidy and for each supplier of agricultural inputs by setting up a real-time management and monitoring platform ensuring complete traceability of agricultural subsidies”.
A “military logistics cell” of the Ministry of the Armed Forces will be created to contribute to the distribution of agricultural inputs.
