The young man who attacked and injured three children with a knife on Tuesday in Zurich was staying in Switzerland as a student. The Zurich Public Prosecutor’s Office requested the preventive detention of this 23-year-old Chinese man.

The restraining measures court now has 48 hours to rule on the request from the investigating authority, the latter indicated on Wednesday.

On Tuesday around noon, the young man attacked a group of children at a daycare in Zurich-Oerlikon with a knife. A 5-year-old boy was seriously injured, two other children of the same age suffered moderate injuries. None of them are in mortal danger.

The daycare worker and a passerby were able to control the attacker and hold him on the ground until the police arrived. Investigators favor the trail of an isolated attacker.
