The member for Mégantic-L’Érable and deputy House leader of the official Opposition, Luc Berthold, denounces the growing inaccessibility of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

“In recent weeks, calls for help from citizens for CRA cases have increased. People are completely incapable of talking to anyone,” denounces MP Berthold.

“In some cases, people wait for several hours and, just when the wait finally seems to be over, the line suddenly cuts. They then come to my office in desperation and are often frustrated with the situation. Fortunately, the members of my team are always happy to help them resolve their case,” adds Luc Berthold.

Furthermore, the MP also notes another problem and the consequences for certain elderly people are significant. Every July, the CRA sends income information to Service Canada to determine eligibility for Old Age Security benefits. This year, for reasons unknown to the member, the information of certain pensioners was not transmitted to Service Canada and their benefits were cut under the pretext that they had not filed their income tax returns.

“It is inconceivable to me that elderly and vulnerable citizens would be penalized due to a lack of communication between two federal departments! The government must take measures to ensure that such situations do not happen again,” insists Luc Berthold.
